Sites Visited:

Manado Dive Sites The dive sites surrounding the tip of North Sulawesi offer many opportunities for divers to experience flora and fauna, which range from the tiny pygmy seahorse to the large dogtooth tuna or barracuda. Occasionally, dolphins come frolicking along side of the boat. Although you can dive North Sulawesi all year, the best time to come is between April - November, as it typically has its monsoon season around the same time as West Malaysia. Check on today's Manado weather forcast. Note: Below is a review of some of the dive sites we frequent. We will be adding to this section feedback from our guests on the various dive sites they visit, as well as experiences from our dive guides.

TJ. Kopi (Manado Tua) August 13th, 2004 - The first rare sighting for both our guests and dives guides of the prehistoric Mola-Mola. This fish is known to live in the far depths of the sea. In order to kill any parasites, it accends to the surface and suntans itself, therefore giving it the name "The Sun Fish". There are also a variety of pelagic fish, such as Napoleon wrasse and barracuda, which can be found there. You will be able to see part of the Eco-modules that the NSWA has set up as part of it's reef recovery programme. You can also see white-tip reefsharks and turtles. This site will not disappoint you, but make sure you bring along your wide-angle lens.

Lekuan 1 (Bunaken) It is always a treat when you are able to find our famous pygmy seeahorse. It is twice the experience to be able to see the new black or yellow species of pygmy seahorse, which can be found at a vaiety of sights surrounding Bunaken Island. White tip sharks and turtles also frequent this dive site.

Alung Banua (Bunaken) July 23rd, 2004 - The black pygmy seahorse was spotted here, about 12 m deep along the wall. Although is took a bit of time to find it, it was certainly worth the wait.

Fukui (Bunaken) This dive site is home to our resident Napoleon wrasses named Lucy & Johnny. You will also find a giant clam garden towards the end of the dive. Upon entry, you will also be able to see some Eco-modules.

Bunaken Timur 1 (Bunaken) A fleet of eagle rays were spotted, as well as white-tipped reef sharks.

Siladen (Siladen) This dive begins at the jetty and ends at the south-eastern tip of Siladen. It combines wall with shallow reef diving. You will find macro critters along with pelagic fish. At dusk, you will encounter large schools of fusiliers. My favourite encounter is during the safety stop, when you can take fantastic pictures of the spine-cheek anenome fish protecting their home.

TJ. Poopoh (South Manado Bay) This site, founded by our own Martinus Wawanda, tends to be one of the favourites with our divers. The variety of marine life you can find here you will see no where else. The different scorpionfish found here look like something out of a science fiction movie. The thorny seahorse is also quite unique.

Seagrass (South Manado Bay) You will find the banded pipefish, as well as a variety of different coloured ghost pipefish weaving in and out of the corals. You have to look carefully, as these creatures blend in very well with their environment.

Nudi Falls (Lembeh) Of course, this site is known for its wide variety of nudibranches, but most people come here to photograph the pygmy seahorse (see photos on main page). This is a fantastic location for macro photography. You must also be very careful, as scorpionfish and stonefish are well disguised on the sandy bottom.

Hairball 2 (Lembeh) This is crustacean heaven. Lobsters, mantis shrimp, as well as a variety of coral shrimp can be found on a large rock located at the dive site.

More than Two Fish at Bunaken and Manado More than Two Fish at Bunaken and Manado
When I first decided to visit the tropical paradise of Bunaken Marine Park and Lembeh Strait, it seemed as if nobody had heard of it. However, once I began to plan the trip I slowly heard more and more about the place. Deep dramatic walls, 30 degree water with 30 m visibility, and bizarre creatures were just some of the descriptions. My excitement grew.
